The architect and alumna of DAU PUC-Rio, Thaís Picanço, won the University Highlight Award of the Year – 2023 from ADEMI with her thesis “Edifício Cidade,” supervised by Professor Cadu Spencer.
The project contributes to the discussion on housing deficit in the country, addressing issues such as the contradiction between the number of private properties and the number of people living in precarious or inadequate housing conditions.
In her introduction, Thaís states: “It is from this contrast that the proposal of the work consolidates itself, reigniting and questioning the debate on the social function of private property and the concentration of this vast number of properties in the hands of a few, causing disadvantaged people to seek shelter in leftover land in urban or rural areas, occupying what is possible and often not meeting the prerequisites of what would be dignified housing.”
