The fourth issue of the PRUMO Journal addresses the need for a shift in the perspective of architects and urban planners in response to broad crises such as energy, environmental, social, and economic issues. The focus is on rethinking the traditional approach, which seeks novelty by replacing the old with the new, and instead incorporates concepts like transformation, reuse, and recovery. The issue explores various ways of acting, highlighting design practices that consider preexistence as a possibility for continuity rather than rupture. Theoretical articles address urban preexistence from specific perspectives, while examples of project interventions emphasize the symbolic potential of new uses. Additionally, there are analyses of specific objects, such as the Museu do Pão in Rio Grande do Sul and MAR in Rio de Janeiro. The issue also covers the relationship between architecture, infrastructure, and the metropolis, discussing the notion of preexistence in different urban contexts, including the landscape of Rio de Janeiro and the favelas. The diversity of approaches reflects a reflection on the contemporary condition.
