PPGArq

The PPGArq at PUC-Rio offers an Area of Concentration in “Architectural Design” with two Research Lines:

“Theory and History of Design” and “Design and Processes in Architecture and Urbanism.”

The Area of Concentration is defined based on the historical studies in Architecture at PUC-Rio and aims to advance the integration between theoretical reflection and architectural practice, enhancing the interdisciplinary environment characteristic of the university.

The decision to consider Design itself as the structuring element of the Program reflects a critical assessment of the contemporary situation of Architecture, pushing beyond traditional boundaries of the discipline and questioning conventional concepts and categories, necessitating new methodologies and approaches.

The two research lines revolve around the exploration of new paradigms for the education, teaching, thought, and practice of Architecture, particularly in terms of its design dimension.

Studies and research are guided by an understanding of Architecture in its intrinsic relationship with the City, examining it through multiple perspectives beyond the more traditional urbanistic focus.

Research Line in Theory and History of Design:

Focuses on theoretical inquiry into Design in Architecture, emphasizing the investigation of its ontological and epistemological aspects. Research encompasses the theoretical and historical studies related to Architecture and the City in modernity, from the social processes defining the field of Design to the cultural representations associated with the universe of design practice, considering the technical processes employed. It also addresses contemporary manifestations in Design thinking, responding to new challenges and methodological approaches emerging in recent years under the impact of digital technologies.

Research Line in Design and Processes in Architecture and Urbanism:

Focuses on studies and research that explore design across multiple scales, from buildings to urban environments, examining the processes and methodologies that underpin design activities, as well as the spatial implications regarding the use and appropriation of spaces. The line prioritizes inclusive and sustainable development within the context of growing socio-economic inequalities and climate change. Research in this line aims to foster a critical view of the contemporary context, integrating approaches that encompass issues related to the use and appropriation of urban environments, social and environmental concerns, innovative alternative technologies, and integrated, collaborative, and participatory design processes.
