Thaís Picanço, an alumna of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at PUC-Rio (DAU PUC-Rio), won the University Highlight of the Year Award – 2023 from ADEMI with her final thesis project titled “Edifício Cidade,” supervised by Professor Cadu Spencer.
The project addresses the issue of housing deficits in Brazil, exploring topics such as the contradiction between the number of private properties and the number of people living in inadequate or no housing.
In her introduction, Thaís states: “It is from this contrast that the proposal of the project is consolidated, rekindling and questioning the debate on the social function of private property and the concentration of this vast number of properties in the hands of a few, forcing underprivileged people to seek shelter on leftover land in urban or rural areas, occupying whatever is possible, often failing to meet the prerequisites for what would be considered dignified housing.”
